In conversation with Kambis Kohansal Vajargah on facilitating cross-border partnerships in energy

In this interview, Kambis Kohansal Vajargah, Head of Startup-Services and Deputy Head of Founder Services at the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber, talks about the organisation’s efforts to connect energy startups with key stakeholders, facilitate cross-border partnerships, and navigate the complexities of international markets.

Making the world a greener place to live in demands a global effort. The energy sector, a critical market that powers economies and communities worldwide, is on the right track — thanks to governments relentlessly pushing their energy agenda and organisations empowering the embrace of sustainable energy solutions.

The Austrian Federal Economic Chamber is one of those organisations that foster global cooperation. They play a crucial role in supporting Austrian businesses, including energy startups, as they expand into other regions like the Middle East.

Interviewer: The Austrian Federal Economic Chamber has an extensive network of state chambers and trade associations. How are you leveraging such a network to support energy startups entering the market?

Mr. Vajargah: The Austrian Federal Economic Chamber operates a robust network of state chambers and trade associations designed to provide a comprehensive support system for startups, including those in the energy sector. Through initiatives like Startup-Services and Founder-Services, we streamline the entrepreneurial process by offering resources, mentorship, and access to industry-specific networks. This enables energy startups to overcome market-entry barriers, connect with key stakeholders, and access essential funding opportunities.

Additionally, our international reach allows us to facilitate market access for startups entering global markets, including tailored programs that prepare them for regulatory, cultural, and logistical challenges. By collaborating with industry experts and leveraging our extensive network, we help energy startups lay the foundation for sustainable growth and innovation.

Interviewer: Your organisation emphasises cross-industry collaboration. How does it promote partnerships between Austrian energy companies and Middle Eastern entities to foster innovation?

Mr. Vajargah: Cross-industry collaboration is central to our mission. Our organisation fosters partnerships between Austrian energy companies and Middle Eastern entities by organising trade delegations, innovation forums, and bilateral business summits. These initiatives serve as platforms for Austrian and Middle Eastern stakeholders to exchange ideas, form alliances, and co-develop innovative energy solutions.

We actively work to identify synergies, whether through shared research and development projects or the integration of complementary technologies. By connecting Austrian expertise in renewable energy and sustainability with the Middle East’s focus on transformative energy projects, we create opportunities for mutual growth and innovation. Our goal is to enable partnerships that address global energy challenges while driving economic growth in both regions.

Interviewer: Can you share common challenges faced by energy-focused startups in international markets, and how do you think these can be addressed?

Mr. Vajargah: Energy-focused startups often face challenges such as navigating complex regulatory frameworks, accessing adequate funding, and establishing credibility in highly competitive markets. Additionally, scaling internationally requires startups to adapt to diverse cultural and business environments, which can be daunting.

To address these challenges, the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber offers tailored mentorship programs that connect startups with industry veterans who can guide them through regulatory landscapes and market-specific hurdles. We also help startups secure flexible funding options through grants, venture capital, and strategic partnerships. Lastly, we emphasise the importance of building a strong international network. By facilitating introductions to key stakeholders in target markets, startups can gain the credibility and connections needed to thrive.

Interviewer: How do you view the Middle East’s potential as a hub for energy innovation? What advice would you give to energy entrepreneurs looking to expand their presence in the region?

Mr. Vajargah: The Middle East holds immense potential as a hub for energy innovation, driven by its strategic investments in renewable energy, sustainability, and advanced technologies. The region’s focus on transforming its energy landscape through initiatives like green hydrogen projects and smart energy grids makes it an attractive destination for entrepreneurs.

For energy startups entering the Middle East, my advice is threefold:

● Understand the ecosystem: Familiarise yourself with the region’s energy priorities, regulatory environment, and funding landscape to tailor your approach effectively.

● Leverage local partnerships: Collaborate with regional stakeholders who have a deep understanding of the market. This can accelerate your market entry and help build trust.

● Innovate with purpose: Align your solutions with the region’s long-term goals, such as sustainability and energy efficiency, to demonstrate value and relevance.

The Middle East offers a unique opportunity for startups to contribute to transformative energy projects while gaining access to a dynamic and forward-looking market. By approaching the region with adaptability and a clear strategy, entrepreneurs can unlock significant growth potential.
